Público: how we helped simplify bilingual editing between Público and Públic
At imaxin we have spent years working to make machine translation fit naturally into real content production workflows. Our work with Público is a good example of that approach to language technology: not as an isolated tool, but as an integrated, practical and useful solution for an editorial environment that demands agility, consistency and ease of use.
This year, Público has launched a new edition in Catalan, Públic, with original content and content adapted from the other publication.
In this context, we began working with the outlet to implement our machine translation platform Opentrad with a very specific objective: to facilitate the translation and adaptation of news articles between both publications, from Spanish to Catalan and also from Catalan to Spanish, in a way that is straightforward to use and can be integrated into their own editorial system.
The challenge was not solely to translate. The real challenge lay in offering a system that the team could use without friction, integrated into their usual workflow and prepared to simplify an editorial process that demands speed, consistency and adaptability between two connected but independently branded publications. Our contribution was precisely that: turning machine translation into a useful working layer within the outlet's editorial ecosystem.
With this implementation, Público also joins the network of media outlets already using our language technology. For us, that carries special significance, because it confirms something we have been observing for years: when machine translation is designed to integrate well into writing and editing workflows, it becomes a genuine productivity tool rather than just occasional support.
This project also represents a line of work we consider especially relevant: helping media organisations build viable, sustainable and easy-to-operate multilingual publishing workflows. In a context where audience diversification and linguistic proximity are gaining importance, having a platform that makes it possible to move content between editions in an agile manner delivers clear value both to the editorial team and to the outlet's strategy.
For us, the collaboration with Público is a new success story because it demonstrates that Opentrad continues to meet a very specific need in the sector: making multilingual management of journalistic content straightforward within real editorial environments. And doing so with a solution ready to integrate, evolve and accompany each client according to their publishing model.
