Summary
Opentrad+ is an innovation project through which imaxin is developing Opentrad, our machine translation platform, into an intelligent language service designed for organisations' translation processes.
The project builds on more than two decades of imaxin's experience in machine translation and language technologies, and on a platform that already integrates different engines and language services. On this basis, Opentrad+ will incorporate new artificial intelligence capabilities to tackle tasks that are currently often spread across different tools: translation, terminology and translation memory management, document processing, anonymisation and interaction with translation systems.
The aim is for Opentrad+ to be not just a tool to which a text is sent in order to obtain a translation, but a platform capable of supporting and automating more complex translation processes, adapting to the context, the language resources and the needs of each organisation.
The challenge
Machine translation has advanced very rapidly in recent years, but having better models does not, on its own, solve all the problems of a professional translation process. Organisations work with their own terminology, translation memories, glossaries, documents in multiple formats, sensitive information and requirements that differ from one project or department to another.
Moreover, the emergence of new AI models expands the available possibilities, but it also makes it necessary to decide which technology to use in each context and how to integrate it without creating dependence on a single provider.
Opentrad+ was created to address this problem from a process perspective: combining models, language resources, documents and AI tools within a common environment, while retaining control over information and allowing the service to be adapted to each organisation.
What imaxin brings
Opentrad+ draws on the experience imaxin has accumulated in machine translation, natural language processing and the development of language platforms. Opentrad has been used for years in projects for public administrations, companies and media organisations, which has given us first-hand knowledge of the problems that arise when machine translation is integrated into real-world processes.
The project will make use of this technological base and the knowledge acquired to take a new step: integrating the components already available with new AI capabilities and building on them a user experience and an architecture geared towards service delivery.
The technical direction, development, integration and validation of the product will be carried out by the imaxin team, complemented by specialist collaborations in architecture, product, user experience and visual identity.
What we are going to develop
One of the main changes will be the introduction of a translation agent that will make it possible to interact with the platform using natural language. Users will be able to request a translation, specify how they want it to be done, provide context or resources and work with the results in a conversational environment.
We will also develop an adaptive translation system based on RAG, designed to make use of translation memories, glossaries and other resources specific to each organisation in order to adapt the output to the domain and maintain greater terminological consistency.
Opentrad+ will also incorporate the management of translation memories and glossaries, the processing of editable and non-editable PDF documents, the integration of anonymisation and translation, a user area with information on activity and usage, and new possibilities for integration with other systems through MCP.
All of this will be accompanied by a redesign of the front ends and the user experience, so that these capabilities can be accessed from a single environment.
Technology and approach
Opentrad+ will be designed around a modular, microservices-based architecture, making use of components that already exist at imaxin and incorporating the new services developed during the project.
One of the technological principles will be to maintain an architecture that is agnostic with regard to AI models. The platform will be able to work with self-hosted models or third-party services and select the most suitable options according to language, use case, required quality, privacy or cost.
This approach will allow the product to evolve as new models and technologies appear, preventing the platform from being tied to a single technological solution.
Validation, pilot and improvements
Development will be carried out progressively, starting with the functional definition and the architecture and continuing with the integration of the new services, the redesign of the interface and the construction of the front ends and the user area.
In the final phase, functional and technical tests and a pilot validation will be carried out, making it possible to check how Opentrad+ performs in scenarios close to real use and to gather information to fine-tune the product before the project is completed.
The evaluation will take into account aspects such as translation times, the processing of PDF documents, terminological accuracy, the reduction of post-editing errors, the performance of the agent, language coverage and the user experience.
Expected results
By the end of the project, we expect to have a new functional version of Opentrad+ that integrates, on a single platform, machine translation, adaptive translation, translation memories and glossaries, document processing, anonymisation and new forms of interaction through AI.
The project should make it possible to simplify processes that currently require several tools and to offer organisations an environment from which to manage their translation needs in a more integrated way.
Opentrad+ will also progressively expand its language coverage and will be ready to integrate different technologies and models as they evolve.
Impact
With Opentrad+, we want to bring recent advances in artificial intelligence and language technologies to real translation processes, where the quality of a model is only part of the problem.
The project will allow imaxin to develop a long-established technology into a new generation of AI-based language services and to strengthen, in particular, aspects such as terminological adaptation, privacy, interoperability and control over processes.
This evolution is aimed at public administrations as well as companies and organisations that need to manage translation on a recurring basis and want to incorporate AI while keeping their own language resources and security requirements.
